South African actress and singer Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51 following a short illness, her family has confirmed.

The renowned Afropop artist, whose musical career began in the 1980s, was also known for her appearances in popular South African TV series. She gained widespread recognition for her hit song Live My Life and collaborated with numerous prominent artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.

Khumalo's sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, shared that the singer passed away on Tuesday while being rushed to the hospital.

"My sister was unwell. She had a brief illness, and we truly believed she was recovering. However, this morning, it became clear that her recovery wasn’t complete. She was quickly taken to the hospital, but sadly, she was pronounced dead," Ms. Rakeepile said.

The specific illness Khumalo was battling has not been disclosed.

Winnie Khumalo leaves behind a remarkable legacy in music and television. Known for her powerful voice and versatility, she released several solo albums and served as a backup singer for the iconic Brenda Fassie.

She is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, who is also a singer, and her son, Thabo Khumalo.

Fans and fellow celebrities have poured out tributes on social media, expressing their shock and grief over her passing.

Kalawa Jazmee Records, the label Khumalo worked with, honored her as a "true icon" whose talent, passion, and unforgettable performances inspired many.

"Her dedication to her craft has left an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of her fans," the label said in a statement.
