China announced on Thursday that it had identified five cases of a new mpox strain but assured that the "outbreak has been effectively managed."

Mpox is a viral disease transmitted to humans primarily by animals but can also spread through close physical contact between people. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and large boil-like skin lesions, which can sometimes be fatal.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global health emergency for mpox in August and renewed it in November following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that claimed over 1,000 lives.

In response to the WHO’s declaration, China initiated mpox screening for individuals entering the country, a measure set to last six months.

On Thursday, Chinese health authorities reported a cluster outbreak of the Clade 1b mpox strain, tracing the source of infection to an individual with a history of living in the DRC.

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention stated that four close contacts of the initial patient were also infected, showing mild symptoms such as rashes and blisters.

"The infected individuals and those at risk are under medical care and observation, and the outbreak has been effectively contained," the agency confirmed.

Authorities added that no additional cases have been identified among other contacts.

According to the WHO, mpox cases have been reported in over 120 countries since 2022.
