Sakaja Flags Off 24 Garbage Trucks, Announces Green Nairobi Company Plans
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja unveiled 24 new refuse compactor trucks at City Hall on Thursday as part of efforts to enhance waste management across the city.
The trucks, set for immediate deployment, will focus on improving garbage collection in the Central Business District (CBD), major corridors, and key markets.
“These trucks are critical to ensuring efficient garbage collection. Their deployment begins immediately,” Governor Sakaja stated.
Addressing the waste management team, Sakaja emphasized the importance of utilizing the new resources to meet the expectations of Nairobi residents.
"Our residents expect results, and we must deliver. Let’s use these trucks effectively to maintain a clean and healthy environment,” he urged.
Governor Sakaja was joined by Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri and Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria, both of whom reiterated the administration’s goal of making Nairobi one of the cleanest cities in Africa.
“Recently, over 3,500 Green Army members participated in cleaning efforts across the county. Cleanliness is vital. We cannot succeed in a dirty environment, and we must ensure our streets, markets, and estates are spotless,” Sakaja added.
The Governor also unveiled plans for the creation of Green Nairobi Company Limited, a new parastatal focused on maintaining the city’s cleanliness. Modeled after Nairobi Water, the company will operate independently to ensure steady funding and streamlined operations.
“This new entity will bring efficiency and accountability to waste management. Garbage collectors will remain part of the system but will follow updated procedures for better performance,” Sakaja explained.
