A student from Kapsabet Boys High School, who missed three consecutive academic terms due to mental health challenges, has defied all odds to achieve a straight A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Brian Otucho, aspiring to become a pilot, was diagnosed with a mental illness that significantly affected his health and led to prolonged absences from school.

His mother, Consalia Otucho, recounted how Brian exhibited signs of confusion and struggled to focus, making it difficult for him to cope with the demanding school routine.

When the KCSE results were announced on Thursday, Brian surprised everyone by scoring an impressive A with 84 points.

"We were deeply concerned as a family about his setbacks, but today, we are celebrating this remarkable achievement. We thank God for the A of 84 points," said his mother.

Kapsabet Boys High School Chief Principal, Kipchumba Maiyo, praised Brian’s brilliance, noting that he consistently topped his class despite his challenges.

"Throughout his time at Kapsabet Boys, Brian was an exceptional student. His condition was a concern for the entire school community, and we worked tirelessly to support his education both in school and at home," Mr. Maiyo shared.

Recognizing the rising prevalence of mental health issues in the country, psychiatrist Zaccius Rop commended Brian’s parents and teachers for their unwavering support. He also urged society to approach mental health conditions with compassion and understanding.

"We must put collective efforts into supporting mental health patients, as they too need our help. Brian’s story is a testament to the potential of individuals battling mental health challenges. Let us show them love and help them overcome these hurdles," said Dr. Rop.
