Nairobi County Bans Street Hawking on Main Roads in the CBD

The Nairobi County government has announced an immediate ban on street hawking along main streets and roads within the Central Business District (CBD).

In a directive issued by Acting County Secretary Godfrey Akumali, hawkers are restricted to operating only in designated backstreets and lanes.

“Hawking of merchandise will only be allowed on backstreets and lanes from Monday to Saturday, between 4 pm and 10 pm,” the notice specified.

Hawkers are limited to the backstreets connecting Tom Mboya Street to Kirinyaga Road, with trading prohibited on key roads such as:

  • Haile Selassie Avenue
  • Kenneth Matiba Road
  • Latema Road
  • Ronald Ngala Street
  • Mfangano Street
  • Hakati Road
  • River Road

The county also emphasized that all walkways within the CBD are strictly reserved for pedestrians and are not to be used for trading activities.

Purpose of the Ban

The move is aimed at enhancing pedestrian mobility and creating more accessible walkways within the city.

Enforcement and Penalties

The county government has warned of strict enforcement measures against those who defy the new regulations.

“The general public is advised that anyone contravening this notice will be prosecuted under the Nairobi City County bylaws,” the statement read.
