A KDF officer meets his death over boda boda fare
A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officer was lynched in Mombasa after allegedly threatening a boda boda rider with a gun over a payment dispute.
The officer reportedly fired several shots into the air, injuring two bystanders before being overpowered by a mob. The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment for bullet wounds.
According to the police, the altercation began when boda boda rider Antony Otieno demanded payment after transporting the officer from Likoni Primary Vyemani Grounds on Friday.
An argument escalated, during which the officer retrieved an AK47 rifle from a small bag and fired shots into the air to intimidate the rider.
“Upon arrival, the deceased alighted from the boda boda and began making numerous phone calls,” the report noted. “The boda boda rider demanded his fare, but the deceased opened his bag, pulled out a gun, cocked it, and fired into the air.”
In an attempt to flee the scene using the rider's motorcycle, the officer was disarmed by the boda boda rider, who managed to pull him off the bike. Witnesses then intervened, pelting the officer with stones, resulting in his death.
“The deceased tried to escape on the motorcycle, but the boda boda rider stopped him. During the struggle, the officer fired multiple shots but was eventually overpowered,” the report added. “Residents who had gathered at the scene attacked him, leading to his death.”
Two bystanders, identified as Claudia Mwashikaji and Mary Trizer, were struck by stray bullets during the chaos. At the same time, the boda boda rider sustained a nose injury after being bitten by the officer.
The injured individuals were rushed to Likoni Sub-County Hospital, where they are currently recovering.
