Improved Performance in 2024 KCSE as Top Scorers Increase

The number of students achieving a mean grade A in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination rose from 1,216 in 2023 to 1,693 in 2024, signaling a steady increase in top performers nationwide.

Speaking during the release of the results, Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba applauded the candidates for their outstanding performance. He attributed the improvement to the new grading system introduced in 2023.

Under this revised system, only two mandatory subjects—Mathematics and one language (either English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language)—are used to compute the mean grade. This is a departure from the previous structure, which considered five subjects, including Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, a science subject, and a humanities subject.

CS Ogamba also highlighted enhanced transparency in the marking process, noting that candidates' exam papers were anonymized to eliminate bias.

The number of candidates qualifying for direct university entry (grade C+ and above) increased to 246,391 (25.53%) compared to 201,133 (22.27%) in 2023. Similarly, candidates with grade C- rose to 476,889 (49.41%) from 401,216 (44.2%) in the previous year. Those achieving a grade of D+ and above also grew to 605,774 (62.76%) compared to 526,222 (58.22%) in 2023.

However, 48,333 candidates scored a mean grade of E, comprising 20,112 women and 28,221 men.

On the downside, results for 840 candidates were canceled due to confirmed exam irregularities. Additionally, the results of 2,829 candidates were withheld on suspicion of malpractice, pending investigations to be completed within 30 days.

CS Ogamba assured the public that disciplinary action would be taken against 91 contracted professionals and teachers found to have facilitated these irregularities.
